The commute to work was a nightmare without the comfort and convenience of her car, but Ally knew she’d done the right thing in selling it, and she’d soon be in her new flat and only a short bus ride away. The move was taking place the following day, which meant she only had one more night in the fancy apartment. She’d miss the car, but she wouldn’t miss her old home. It may have looked flash, but it was cold and bare and Ally had never felt comfortable there. As tiny as her new place was, at least it would be cosy.

‘Good morning.’ Ally stopped by Francine’s desk as usual, friendly smile in place. She’d had to tone down the brightness of her smiles upon greeting her former friend as the bigger the smile, the more suspicious Francine became.

‘Morning.’ Francine’s reply was mumbled, but at least it was there, which was a start. Ally didn’t want to push her luck, so she moved on, heading upstairs but stopping off at the kitchen first to make coffees, which she carried through to the HR office.

‘Oh?’ Did those plans involve hiding out in her neighbour’s house by any chance?

‘Yes, I actually have a life. I’m going into town with Martine and a bunch of girls.’

Ally’s grip tightened on her mug as it almost slipped from her fingers. Martine had been Kelly’s best friend in their former life. And they were still friends? Why hadn’t Kelly lost Martine along with the rest of her life?

‘What’s this I hear about a party?’ Jason asked before Ally could question Kelly about her friendship with Martine. He grabbed his cup of coffee from the tray and took a sip.

‘Alana’s having a little housewarming party tomorrow night.’ Kelly’s answer was laced with a sneer.

‘Aren’t I invited? I’m offended.’

‘You should count yourself lucky.’ Kelly grabbed a sheaf of papers and stood up, smoothing down her miniscule skirt with her free hand. ‘Please excuse me from this scintillating conversation. I have photocopying to do.’

‘I’ll do that for you.’ Ally snatched the papers before turning to Jason. ‘Of course you’re invited. I’ll write the address down for you later.’ She had some making up to do to Jason too after the sexual harassment debacle.

Ally eased her guilt a
